MEET THE DESIGNER
Palma Canaria
Meet Juliana & Monica
Mother and daughter, passionate for design and fashion, restless admirers of manual work and craftsmanship, decided to get out of their routines to create Palma Canaria in 2016 designing unique, innovative accessories 100% handmade in Colombia.
When Juliana and Monica first started, they approached a group of artisans in the coast where they proposed a twist to traditional handcraft in Colombia. Their relationship with their artisans is very close. Because of Juliana, Monica, the artisans are now designing pieces very different to what they have been making their whole lives. Monica, who is the creative director, does field work. She goes to the different regions and spends time with the artisans designing, creating and adjusting. She then returns to Bogotá to adapt them to launch always taking into account that the product is functional, not just beautiful.
Initially, Palma Canaria began with tropical designs like basket bags and hats. Today, the brand has evolved with a more urban approach to reach a wider market, but always creating new products by the hand of their artisans. They currently work with communities in four regions of the country (Atlántico, Quindío, Boyacá and Nariño) and they hope to continue exploring the rest of the country searching for talent and “magic hands”. Without them, Palma Canaria would not be where it is today. The natural fibers and techniques are the main source of inspiration as well as their daily life, trips and the communities with which they collaborate.
